The Varied Repetitions Sonatas by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (composed 1758–9, published 1760) constituted a bold experiment. Stating each repetition, Bach applies the art of variation to each one. Initially a service ("play this and you'll sound like you're improvising"), the opus concludes with a masterclass in variation.
