14-18 Une vie d'bonhomme : pendant la guerre la chanson continue

The sound of the cannon is always accompanied by its share of songs. In this regard, the great conflict of 14-18 gave many poets the opportunity to express their talent. While at the front, soldiers adapted popular tunes to sing about the misery of their condition, in Parisian cabarets, songwriters also had a great time, glorifying "the bravery of our soldiers" and denouncing "the enemy" for some, expressing their disgust at "the absurdity of the massacre" for the few rare dissenters at the rear. It is the entire diversity of these viewpoints that serves as the framework for the musical show "une vie de Bonhomme." The desire to show the different ways in which people could sing about this war depending on where they viewed it from. In this album, we find the famous "Chanson de Craonne," emblematic of the suffering of the soldier left naked to the massacre, but also many other lesser-known songs, such as "le testament du fantassin," "la roulante," or "a Hurtebise." Cabaret songs are alongside those from the front as well as texts from the anarchist poet Eugène Biseau. Seventeen tracks that testify to this incredible capacity for human expression that man exercises even in the abyss.
