1929 - Das Jahr Babylon is the third album by Thomas Fehlmann in 2018 and represents what seems to be a creative peak in his long career, whether during his solo career, his early days with the band Palais Schaumburg, his collaboration with Moritz von Oswald in 3MB, or his long-standing work with The Orb. Leaving The Orb at the end of 2017 allowed him to unleash unexpected energies. Completely different from Los Lagos, his dancefloor-oriented album released in September on Kompakt, 1929 - Das Jahr Babylon is the soundtrack to a documentary. To pay tribute to the acclaimed TV series Berlin Babylon and to place it in context, German director Volker Heise created a documentary about the year 1929, the fateful year of the Weimar Republic in Germany during which the series takes place. Heise's moving documentary depicts Germany's capital, facing radical changes from dark forces poised to plunge the world into the chaos of World War II. This is the second time Thomas Fehlmann has worked with Volker Heise after the massive documentary 24h Berlin, A Day in the Capital released in 2009, for which he released the album Gute Luft the same year. Fehlmann's compositional work for 1929 – Das Jahr Babylon is based on samples from the era and relativizes the exaggerated joy of living with threatening nuances that anticipate the beginning of humanity's darkest chapter. Although all the sounds fit within an atmosphere of the time, this soundtrack exudes a certain modernity. Thomas Fehlmann has achieved the bold feat of musically translating the disturbing resemblance between the political situation 90 years ago and the current one. An exceptional soundtrack that truly deserved a physical release.
