Recorded in three sessions, this record, considered by Robert Christgau as the pinnacle of Thelonious Monk's work, was a huge critical success. The compositions are sometimes bewildering, the strange structure of "Brilliant Corners," achieved after 25 takes, which drove the saxophonist Ernie Henry to the brink of madness. The complexity of this track also led producer Orrin Keepnews to combine several takes to obtain the version heard on the album. Recorded two months later, "Bemsha Swing" features the trumpet of Clark Terry in place of Henry's sax (a first version of the track was recorded in 1952 on the album Thelonious Monk Trio). A brilliant improviser, Monk showcases the full measure of his talent here on a rhythm of surgical precision dominated by the drums of Max Roach, present on 4 of the 5 tracks of this great classic.
