Cage and Dowland: the two Johns, 400 years apart, echo one another through a shared taste for restrained expression, concise forms, intimate performance — and also for the pleasure words can provide in themselves. Cultivating, as always, a fruitful anachronism, Thélème brings together on 'all we get is life' the complete works for two voices and lute by Dowland and several compositions by Cage. Finally, Sting, an artist of international renown, offers a reworking of his hit 'Shape of my Heart', which here becomes a kind of 21st-century 'lute song', thus bringing the circle full circle on an album where Renaissance and the present intersect, enter into dialogue, mingle and blur together to transcend the boundaries of aesthetics and genres.
