Cage and Dowland: the two Johns, 400 years apart, respond to each other through a shared taste for sober expression, concise forms, and intimate performance — as well as the pleasure that words themselves provide. Cultivating as always a fruitful anachronism, Thélème brings together in 'all we get is life' the complete pieces for two voices and lute by Dowland and several compositions by Cage. Finally, Sting, an artist of international renown, offers a rewriting of his song 'Shape of my Heart', which here becomes a kind of 21st-century 'lute song', thus closing the loop in an album where the Renaissance and the present cross paths, enter into dialogue, blend, and merge to transcend the boundaries of aesthetics and genres.
