Swan Lake is the first of a series of three ballets written by Tchaikovsky and undoubtedly the most famous. The work is primarily known in its 1895 form, when it became a classic in the choreography of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. This "imperial" version diverges from Tchaikovsky's original score, with several cuts, shortenings, and relocations. This high-definition recording presents the work as it was heard in 1877 at the premiere and highlights the extraordinary symphonic qualities of Tchaikovsky's original conception.
