Motown producer and composer Norman Whitfield brought together The Undisputed Truth to further explore the psychedelic soul he had developed with the Temptations on songs like "Cloud Nine" and "Psychedelic Shack." Joe Harris, Billie Calvin, and Brenda Evans were assembled as the lead vocalists, and their first single was "Save My Love For A Rainy Day"/"Since I've Lost You," which was released on Gordy in February 1971 and reached number 43 on the R&B chart. This was followed by "Smiling Faces Sometimes"/"You Got The Love I Need," which became a huge hit, reaching number 2 on the R&B chart and number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their debut album "The Undisputed Truth" followed and included not only the four tracks released on 7" but also an almost interstellar version of "Ball Of Confusion (That's What The World Is Today)," "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," as well as a very soulful take on Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." Tracks like "California Soul" and "Aquarius" also checked the psychedelic soul box. Overall, it was a fantastic debut album and sold well. Surprisingly, this fantastic album has not been reissued since 1972. Therefore, Ace is thrilled to bring it back to the shelves pressed on 180g black vinyl. While the planet is still a "ball of confusion (that's what the world is today)," records like this speak to both an old and a new generation. Good music never goes out of style.
