Having honed his rhythm’n’blues chops beautifully with the Spencer Davies Group, Steve Winwood changed tack with the Traffic adventure, which he launched in the green in a pure hippie spirit with Chris Wood, Dave Mason and Jim Capaldi. With the first unclassifiable album by these Englishmen, equally drawn to folk, psychedelic rock, blues, cabaret and jazz, the mood is cheerful, totally spaced-out, and everyone tries out one of the instruments that comes to hand (violin, sitar, tambourine, mellotron, shakkai, harpsichord, etc.).
