In Latin, the word Gemini means "two together" or "twins." In astrological terms, Geminis are known for their curiosity and versatility, among other traits. For the 9-piece instrumental group from San Diego, The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, jazz and funk have always been the two genres they consistently and effectively fuse, forming the foundation of their sound. By exercising their stylistic curiosity and versatility, they have expanded upon this foundation on their new album for Colemine Records. SFSE steers their danceable yet introspective music into new sonic territory. While their brand of breakbeat-driven funk-soul-jazz remains the cornerstone of their sound, they have increasingly begun to draw inspiration from library music labels such as KPM Music, spiritual jazz labels such as Tribe & Black Jazz Records, and exotic jazz artists such as Cal Tjader and Dorothy Ashby.
