Inspired by J.G. Ballard's *The Atrocity Exhibition* and the psychedelic luminescence of California, The Soft Rider's debut EP reinterprets synth-pop and electro-post-punk through the prism of a Los Angeles that is both fascinating and chilling. Behind its deceptively pop facade, the music produced by The Soft Rider embraces the paradoxes of the capitalist way of life: palm-lined freeways and the reflections of a radiant sun are met with a 128 BPM pulse, candy-pink melodies, and the distant echo of waves, metal, and concrete. Citing Moroder, Mr. Flaggio, and Throbbing Gristle in turn, the four tracks on "The Pool" hint at what lies beneath the veneer of sea, sex & sun. Confronting the myth of glamour with a far more precarious reality, The Soft Rider bounces the glittering reflections of the American dream off a hardened steel surface where hedonistic nonchalance and ecological disaster mingle.
