Thanks to Black & Blue records for giving us this chance to listen to the organist in such conditions, in public*, surrounded by friends, admirers, and on a repertoire of carefully selected standards, never before recorded by her. Early fans never tire of preferring her in this orchestral format reduced to the essentials. Here she is in a trio, surrounded by her faithful drummer, the energetic and subtle Thomas Derouineau and, on guitar, the elegant and devilishly effective Nicolas Peslier. It is with this kind of format, in duo or trio, that the organist became known and found success in the late 60s. In the early seventies, Rhoda Scott is one of the very few jazz artists to experience a popularity equivalent to that of pop singers, performing on television and on the biggest stages in the world. Then, as the years went by, the attention of the general public shifted to other instrumentalists until just 20 years ago, in July 2004.
On an idea from Jean-Pierre Vignola**, one of her great admirers, Rhoda Scott found herself headlining a major evening titled "Ladies Night" at Jazz à Vienne, surrounded by a 100% female orchestra. The format was so well received that "The Barefoot Organist" regained the success of her glory days, touring again in all the biggest festivals in the world with her Lady Quartet made up of the finest female jazz talent in France and then her Ladies All Stars. Becoming the matriarch in terms of jazz, like the druidess in possession of the magic potion capable of passing it on to new generations of women, Rhoda Scott serves the cause of a creative, modern jazz, constantly in gestation. But fans do not always find the Rhoda they cherish deep down. Here, she is unchanged, free, enthusiastic, generous, smiling, radiant, inventive, irresistible… in a word: sunny! An essential album that complements current productions.
