The Remainder consists of Neil Arthur from Blancmange (vocals, guitar, and synthesizers), artist Finlay Shakespeare (synthesizers and vocals), and Liam Hutton (drums, guitar, and synthesizers). The latter, better known for his work with Boxed In, Neneh Cherry, and more recently, Young Fathers, began the writing process in 2015. "There was never a briefing or a clear definition of the project we were working on collectively," he explains. It was always a completely open statement. The lively and icy rhythms, cascading synths, shadowy psychedelia, absurd humor, and lyrics that describe everyday life are all prominent elements on the trio's debut album, which looks to the future. The hypnotic and rhythmic songs are a way to let loose, confront, and express a new and strange positivity despite all the darkness. Each song is also connected by interludes created by Liam's mother, Jo Hutton, a sound engineer and composer/designer of experimental music and sound art.
