If elegance in vintage jazz has a name, it is The Modern Jazz Quartet. And not just because these four musicians were always very well dressed – black suit and tie, or even white suit and black bow tie. In the mid-fifties, roughly two currents coexist in jazz: cool on the West Coast, hard bop on the East Coast. Formed ten years earlier under Dizzy Gillespie, the Modern Jazz Quartet can play all that, as well as the blues and even a touch of classical music thanks to John Lewis, a very great pianist and arranger. The Modern Jazz Quartet knows how to compose music that is as exciting as it is accessible to everyone. Of course titled in homage to Django Reinhardt, Django is their biggest hit. This album is a bouquet of vibraphone flowers (played by the extraordinary Milt Jackson).
