"Misfits" is the seventeenth studio album by The Kinks, released in May 1978. Recording began in July 1977 at KONK studio in London and extends the mainstream rock direction introduced with Sleepwalker in 1977. The album marked a period of significant changes within the band: long-time bassist John Dalton left the group after the release of Sleepwalker but still appears on several tracks from these sessions. He was replaced for one album by Andy Pyle. The album was also the last for pianist John Gosling.
The singles and notable tracks – "Misfits," "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy," "Live Life," and "In a Foreign Land" – explore themes of alienation, resilience, and the struggles of everyday life. Critics praised the writing and the introspective and often poignant lyrics, calling this album one of the most thoughtful and personal works of the band.
Misfits holds an important place in the Kinks' discography, demonstrating their continued relevance and adaptability in the changing musical landscape of the late 1970s. The album has been recently remastered from the original ¼" tapes.
