Gunslinger - Vinyl

Description

The San Francisco-based band The Holy Kiss is resurrected to offer us, for the first time, their latest recording on vinyl. Recorded in 2009 by Skot Brown (The Phantom Limbs, Altar de Fey) and originally released on 50 handmade CD-Rs, Gunslinger is a wild album that represents the peak of The Holy Kiss, with four tracks blending fiery blues with blood, sweat, and a good dose of The Birthday Party. The title track of this 12-inch, “Gunslinger,” is a cover of a Bo Diddley song rearranged by the band to satisfy its craving for melodic cacophony. Singer Matty Rue Morgue sings from the gut behind black sunglasses, while “drummer Nick Ott [stands] like a giant over an elfin drum kit, pounding the skins with such fervor that he risks spontaneous combustion” (Tatiana Simonian, L.A. Weekly). Officially formed in 2000, this darkly humorous, old-school quartet in custom-tailored suits “produces a dark and deliciously discordant racket, inspired by murder ballads, perfect for evoking the wandering spirits of cheats, madmen, drunks, and other outcasts of society whom the band likes to praise in its little Dickensian dark airs” (Bill Picture, San Francisco Chronicle).
