Despite its strong influences from The Cramps, The Doors, and Television, Jeffrey Lee Pierce's band is, from this first album, completely original. Haunted by the spirit of the blues, without adhering to its letter (see the hysterical cover of "Preaching The Blues" by Son House), close to punk in the energy and frenzy it displays, it offers here eleven hallucinatory tracks, streaked with sharp slide guitars, on which Pierce's unique voice chants fascinating lyrics. A music that will leave its mark, acknowledged by some (Noir Désir, 16 Horsepower) or more underground, but which bursts today in the listener's face with the same freshness as it did twenty years ago. Timeless, because completely out of the ordinary.
