The Groundhogs formed as a blues band in the early 60s. By 1970, when they recorded their third album, Thank Christ For The Bomb, they were evolving towards a rather heavy progressive rock sound. This album has been described as proto-punk and proto-grunge, and called "a masterpiece" by NME. It counts among its famous fans Captain Sensible of The Damned, Karl Hyde of Underworld and former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus, whose solo work borrows a few tricks from this album.
