The Pittsburgh band signs with Sub Pop and takes us back to the 90s with its new wild and punchy punk/post-punk/indie album. GOTOBEDS are Sub Pop’s new signing. But... who are they? One word, one name, a bit like the name of their super-punk family. Singer-guitarist Hazy Lazer tells us their story. In 2009, just after losing his job, Lazer ran into an old friend, Parryman, with whom they started talking about forming a band. Soon after, Arid Plateau became their bassist. After a few guitarists came and went, COOL U, who played drums in Hazy Lazer’s band KimPhuc, picked up a guitar and completed the band’s final lineup. In the end, THE GOTOBEDS is a mix of indie/punk/post-punk with a DIY edge, a bit like their influences Sonic Youth, Mission of Burma, Wire... Recently, we got to hear the cheeky first single Real Maths/Too Much from their new album, their first on Sub Pop, BLOOD // SUGAR // SECS // TRAFFIC, produced by Matt Schor and mastered by Matthew Barnhart. It’s eleven tracks of restless, punchy punk/post-punk, recalling Devo or Wire, where each song hits at different tempos. As a little surprise, there are a few guests lending their voices, like Tim Midyett (Silkworm, Bottomless Pit, Mint Mile) on 'Rope' or the members of Protomartyr on 'Why'd you'. They do what they want and what they like, they’re punks. And one thing is certain, with them we’re back in the 90s.
