The house band of CBGB, The Fleshtones, hailing from Queens, New York, laid everything bare with this legendary debut album. It's garage rock as it’s meant to be played. There are tambourines and maracas, harp and saxophone solos, and even a fabulous double bass that you don't hear much anymore. 'Roman Gods' has a great production sound, loud and clear, while still being as thick and punchy as the old records from the 60s. The opening track, "The Dreg," is absolutely dirty in the best sense of the word. Then, the album rolls on with "I've Gotta Change My Life" and continues with highlights like "Hope Come Back" and a scorching cover of "Ride Your Pony" by Lee Dorsey. The world should rediscover the "Roman Gods" and give them the tribute they deserve.
