Six years after his last album, the goldsmith of British pop, Neil Hannon (aka THE DIVINE COMEDY), returns at the peak of his art with a new inspired masterpiece. Forget Neverland, welcome to Foreverland. Most of the heroes of British pop from the 90s/00s are out of breath or missing, while Neil Hannon has never seemed so spry and so inspired. The song that today opens the album with a fanfare, Napoleon Complex, immediately sets the scene for a new repertoire in the form of a journey through time. “I wanted this record to be bathed in a slightly imperial atmosphere,” Neil Hannon confides. “Like a pop album recorded in the 18th or 19th century, with an opulent side, without taking myself for Beethoven.” Catherine The Great, where Neil ties the fate of Catherine II of Russia to a personal story of unspoken love, brilliantly demonstrates the relevance of this choice of meticulous orchestrations, which he has made his secret. The sublime To The Rescue sweeps everything in its path like a torrent of tears. Funny Peculiar (a duet with Cathy Davey) is, in another register, a claimed tribute by Hannon to the duets between Frank and Nancy Sinatra. As for the other tracks on the album, each successive listen reveals Neil Hannon’s prodigious talent as an arranger and composer. A new cornerstone in the group’s rich discography!
