Losing Is A Luxury

Description

The Disassociation is a collective made up of the five members of Refrigerator, Amy Maloof from the band Falcon Eddy, author/bassist Jonathan Lethem, and artist/musician Sam Sousa. Their first record consists of material written and shared over the past five years, recorded during a long weekend of seventy-three hours. It's called Perdre est un luxe. Some songs feature one member, while others include all eight members, as the mood shifts from stoic Tammy Wynette to the yodeling astrologer ESP Chambolic ESP Godz/MIJ before returning to New Zealand around 1985. This is not a side project, not an "eclectic and organic album," it's a damn electric stop. The group is a true collective with members switching between instruments, singing, and writing songs. The seed of the project was a song that Maloof recorded for Lethem and Sousa's weekly radio show on KSPC. Lethem, who has written lyrics for Lee Ranaldo, Walter Salas-Humara, and many others, does the same here, but he also plays and sings, while his radio co-host sings a gruff Lee Hazlewood/Ann Margret duet with Maloof. Fridge offers both knee-play ballads and some nods to AM pop canon that should have been elements on the record, as the members accompany or step out with the collective of The Disassociation. The group is organizing three concerts on the West Coast and two on the East Coast, as well as several ephemeral variations of satellite versions of the group, which will include two to seven members, across the United States throughout spring and summer. Call us on your landline if you want to book us. We just threw our disposable phones into the Pacific. It was a group decision.
