"Songlines" may be the most accessible album by the Derek Trucks Band; it completely captures the diverse strengths of the group and its leader. One of the most important virtues of Songlines (the title is taken from an Indigenous tale) is the down-to-earth presence of singer Mike Mattison. His usually somewhat gruff tones can give way to an emotive falsetto, as on "Crow Jane," but in any case, Mattison's singing is free of affectation and filled with concentrated emotions. Working with producer Jay Joyce, the singer also collaborates on original songs like the understated album track, "This Sky," thus adding personality to the group with more than just his voice.
