It all began in 1985 with the group Bronski beat. Singer Jimmy Somerville decided to form his own band. That is how he met former The Committee pianist Richard Coles. They formed The communards. The duo chose this name to pay tribute to the revolutionaries of the Paris Commune. With Jimmy Somerville’s voice and the talented musician Richard Coles, the musical adventure could begin. Influenced by the new wave movement, The communards released, also in 1985, the hits “Don't leave me this way,” a cover of Thelma Houston, and “Reprise.” These successes are featured on this first album by the group, “The communards,” which was released a year after the duo was formed.
