The Spell is a limited reissue of the fifth album by the California indie rock band The Black Heart Procession, celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of its release. The band was formed in San Diego in 1997, around Pall Jenkins (vocals, guitars, synths, etc.) and Tobias Nathaniel (piano, guitar, organ, etc.) from Three Mile Pilot. Spells can be cast on a person, a love story, a nation, etc.; they enchant and ensnare, they disorient and deceive. They are at the heart of The Spell, both through the webs they weave and the shock that occurs when they are broken. And there is no better word to describe the haunting intoxication of The Black Heart Procession's sound. Their sound is what you hear when driving at night through the American West. Like the vast landscapes, it is music that knows how to be both desolate and lush. And it knows that while sadness pulls you down, discontent pushes you forward. That’s why the procession never stops. Here, the 6/8 rhythm of a song sweeps you into a seductive and whimsical waltz, and the next moment, the violin and piano evoke the orchestra of a lonely cabaret under dim lights. Then the strings stop weeping and transform into a propulsive rhythm, and we speed towards a cinematic twilight. There is an echo and an immensity, a sound big enough to fill the night, larger than life. A soundtrack for that midnight solo journey, the ghost towns of the heart coming back to life.
