A superb three-volume collection of two CDs each, these “Anthology” sets are the precious discographic complement to the Beatles’ body of work, since they contain only unreleased material. Covering the group’s early years (1958-1964), this first volume unearths extremely rare recordings by the Quarry Men (the first incarnation of the Beatles), sessions in Liverpool with Stuart Sutcliffe, in Hamburg for singer Tony Sheridan, excerpts from the unsuccessful Decca audition in 1962, the first EMI sessions with George Martin, rehearsals, studio jams, countless alternate takes and unreleased tracks, as well as live recordings in the BBC studios, on television sets, in concert in London, Stockholm, etc. Finally, “Anthology 1” opens with “Free As A Bird”, a track recorded for the occasion by the three surviving Beatles over a demo by John Lennon.
