Southern, for sure. Southern rock, less sure. Before being crowned the popes of Southern rock, the Allman Brothers were a genre unto themselves. A genre whose essence oozes from this New York live recording from March 1971, conceived by brothers Duane and Gregg, ultimately very different from that of all their pseudo-rivals. The searing groove comes from Muscle Shoals. The blues sweats like never before. And the flowing solos have the urgency of improvisations worthy of jazzmen (In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed). Guitars in hand, Duane Allman slides like a convict and Dicky Betts lays down inspired lines. And behind his ultra-soulful B3 organ, Gregg Allman lays the solid foundations of the house. Above all, there is an Allman magic, a true grace in this virtuosic material that had every reason to weigh a thousand tons and bore its audience, but which remains continually tasteful, melodic, and inspired.
