Requiem Mass 1605

Description

Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611): Requiem 1605 'Officium defunctorum' - Alonso Lobo (1555-1617): Lamentationes Ieremiae Prophetae, Versa est in luctum. Tomás Luis de Victoria’s requiem mass for six voices, written in 1603 and published in 1605, is a masterpiece. It is one of a handful of large-scale works that enjoy broad popular appeal in the 21st century. For many, it represents what Renaissance polyphony is, what it sounds like, and how expressive it can be. The disc also contains two well-known works by Victoria’s contemporary, Alonso Lobo. The performance here comes from the renowned professional chamber choir Tenebrae, conducted by Nigel Short, following their recent recording of Francis Poulenc’s "La voix humaine," nominated by BBC Music Magazine.
