SOLOMON KING

Description

Produced by Josephine "Jo" Bridges and released on her label We Produce, The Temprees were a soul vocal trio from Memphis, featuring one of pop's greatest falsettos, that of Jasper "Jabbo" Phillips. Their 1972 debut album, Lovemen, has an appropriate name; it is one of the greatest R&B kiss albums ever made, with one burning slow jam after another. Their rendition of "Dedicated to the One I Love" is rightly considered the best version ever, but "If I Could Say What's on My Mind," "Love... Can Be So Merveilleous," and "I Love You, You Love Me" will have you and your partner swaying your hips (and will also mend any quarrels between lovers without restraint). Stax didn't really know what to do with such sweet soul (We Produce was a Stax label), so Lovemen stagnated commercially, but today it is recognized as a model of its kind.
