Sylvaine has become an iconic figure in ambient post-metal, but ‘Eg Er Framand’, her second EP, evokes her oldest roots. Kathrine Shepard grew up in Norway, on the outskirts of downtown Oslo, between tradition and modernity. While studying music, dance, and drama in high school, she performed several times at Kampen Church. It was in this 19th-century monument that Kathrine recorded most of ‘Eg Er Framand’. The particular sound of this location enhances the EP's music, which includes adaptations of traditional Norwegian folk songs as well as three reinterpretations of Sylvaine's compositions. The origins of "Dagsens Augo Sloknar" remain mysterious, but the lyrics were written in 1891 by Elias Blix, a professor turned politician who also wrote hymns. True to the delicate melody of the original, Sylvaine sings in a haunting and soothing whisper, like a shadow. But although it opens with a simple organ melody, the end of the track calls for a trance. ‘Eg Er Framand’ is a passionate and exciting project, serving one of metal's most impressive voices.
