On their seventh album The Breaks - their second for Joyful Noise Recordings - SUUNS is lost in the limbo. Yet, The Breaks is the most emotionally and sonically rich experimental rock album the Montreal band has produced to date. The trio composed of Ben Shemie, Joseph Yarmush, and Liam O'Neill relies more than ever on their pop instincts. However, it is remarkable to note that SUUNS has tapped into a more extreme sound palette this time, a palette that extends well beyond the band's fundamental principles. On The Breaks, Shemie, O'Neill, and Yarmush playfully experiment with loops, synths, samples, and MIDI instruments, reminiscent of a post-millennial Tangerine Dream having fun with downtempo trip-hop rhythms. O'Neill took on the role of producer for The Breaks, arranging, structuring, and editing many of Shemie and Yarmush's ideas from sporadic rehearsal sessions in Pro Tools, reimagining the songs over and over again over a period of two years.
