Sufjan Stevens is an artist, author, and composer living in New York. He has released eight studio albums and a number of collaborations with other musicians, choreographers, and visual artists. His latest album, The Ascension, was named Album of the Year 2020 by the New York Times. Convocations, a two-and-a-half-hour reflection with 49 tracks on the present times, is being released in a five-vinyl box set via the Asthmatic Kitty label. Sufjan wrote and recorded Convocations in the fall of 2020 in tribute to his father's life and in response to his passing in September, two days after the release of The Ascension. Composed of five volumes – Meditations, Lamentations, Revelations, Celebrations, Incantations – Convocations explores loss, isolation, and anxiety through five sound cycles where each volume reproduces and reflects a stage of grief. Musically, the album invokes the lessons of pioneers such as Morton Subotnick, Maryanne Amacher, Christian Fennesz, Brian Eno, and Wolfgang Voigt, and deepens the ideas that Stevens has explored throughout his career in works such as Enjoy Your Rabbit, The BQE, Planetarium, Aporia, and his soundtracks for choreographer Justin Peck, the New York City Ballet, and others.
