Wilhelm Backhaus was one of the most renowned pianists in the world in the 20th century. He won the famous Anton Rubinstein Competition in Paris in 1905 at the age of 21 and limited his repertoire after World War II to the works of the great masters Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Schubert, Haydn, and Schumann.
