This is the case of Victoria, whose exclusively religious work, nourished by the multiple influences of the Roman period, has managed to elevate the genre: these Responsories testify to an unprecedented expressiveness and justify the reputation of the one who remains the greatest polyphonist of the Spanish Renaissance. Thomas Luis de Victoria (1548-1611) is one of the very first composers of sacred music of his time. The Tenebrae Responsories are in the liturgy an equivalent of the Lessons of Tenebrae.
