Description
The Thomaskantor was one of the most important positions in 18th century Germany. Following the death of Johann Kuhnau, several renowned musicians applied to succeed him. The first choice of the city council of Leipzig was Georg Philipp Telemann, but he declined after receiving a salary increase for his last job. The next two were Johann Friedrich Fasch and Christoph Graupner. Fasch accepted another position, while Graupner was retained by his employer. Only the last one was available: Johann Sebastian Bach.
