Star Feminine Band

In Benin, seven young girls sing the pride and determination of a generation eager for freedom: together, they form Star Feminine Band, a group as resounding as it is necessary. It was in Naititingou, a peaceful town in the northwest of the country, that the story began a few years ago. In this region where the prospects for a young woman are often limited to miserable jobs, early pregnancies, or forced marriages, a musician resolved to give a voice to those affected. Through a call for applications on a local radio station, André Baléguémon met seven girls from the surrounding villages. None of them had ever played an instrument. Under André's guidance, they learned to play together and united around a desire: to communicate their culture, their language, and their demands. Without warning, a group of young girls from a remote region of Benin shakes up the garage rock idiom with astonishing freshness, inventiveness, and energy, playing right, loud, and proud.
