Spencer Cullum's 2nd album, the musician who revives English folk (Les Inrocks) On Spencer Cullum's "Coin Collection 2", the Nashville musician steps away from the pedal steel and closer to center stage. This new collection of tracks is a kaleidoscopic blend of folk, jazz, and pop, adorned with refined songwriting and arrangements. While the modus operandi of "Coin Collection" was a very distinctive English folk record, Cullum says of "Coin Collection 2": "I wanted to sound different. I wanted to try and get beyond my influences... I was trying to find some new ideas for myself. You can never escape your musical influences, but I wanted them to be more discreet." Although similarities to other things can be detected here and there – The Beach Boys' "Friends" LP, perhaps, or "The Incredible String Band" – the whole is resolutely Cullum's own. Also reassuring is that there hasn't been a sonic upheaval since "Coin Collection", but rather that the beautifully sun-drenched atmosphere of an English country garden, with bees buzzing around beer, has remained.
