The third studio album by Spell Songs, In Thin Air, serves as a musical complement to the book by Robert and Jackie, The Book of Birds – a book that is a love letter to the splendors and mysteries of avian life, and a clear call to stop the loss of birds on land, sea, and sky. The music was created in the contemplative green oak rotunda of Ty Sanctaidd (Sacred House) in the Ty Trefacwn estate in southwest Wales, and recorded at Castle Sound Studio in Pencaitland, East Lothian. As with our other albums, In Thin Air was recorded and produced by Andy Bell of Hudson Records. Throughout The Book of Birds, a gentle mantra unfolds – "Nest, Egg, Beak, Song, Feather, Flight, Migration – these are the Seven Wonders that together evoke the miracle of the Bird." Intrigued by this concept, the seven musicians created a new complex album that has an overarching narrative, capturing the remarkable world of birds, from birth to flight. The Spell Songs ensemble features the multiple talents and collaborative genius of Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Seckou Keita, Kris Drever, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter, and Jim Molyneux.
