With "Kiss of Fire," Spark presents its latest project and once again affirms its desire to push musical boundaries. This ensemble is renowned for its original and varied programs that transcend traditional genres and constantly redefine classical music. For "Kiss of Fire," Spark collaborated with the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra of Heilbronn. This meeting gives the ensemble's characteristic sound a new dimension and enriches its musical spectrum with an additional orchestral color. With "Kiss of Fire," Spark offers us an album that makes palpable the energy that drives the ensemble. Far more than a simple release from this "classical group," it is a work that, since its creation, reinterprets classical music with boundless vitality and audacity. Here, passion and a taste for experimentation blend with a highly precise sonic art, woven from a singular story that runs through the album like a common thread. At the heart of this album is the eponymous concert piece by Dutch composer Chiel Meijering, a longtime friend and musical accomplice of Spark. His music shapes the ensemble's unique and energetic sound. Meijering composed "Kiss of Fire," a concerto for Spark, string orchestra, and percussion, as a journey through the many facets of love. The nine pieces explore a vast palette of emotions: from tender security and ambivalent feelings in "Love and Hate" to the blossoming of new feelings in "When Love Comes Knocking," through fulfillment in "I Have Loved and I've Been Loved," relentless desire in "Again, Again, Again, Again, Again," constant intimacy in "Together Forever," hope in "Dawning of Lovelight," loving devotion in "For a Special Lady I Know," farewells in "When the Party Is Over," and sensual perception in "Five Senses in Love." The premiere took place on Valentine's Day 2014 in Amsterdam—a musical declaration marking the beginning of a long collaboration between Spark and Meijering. After "Kiss of Fire" was performed on international stages and with various orchestras, the final recording took place in Heilbronn on February 14, 2024, exactly ten years after the premiere. The Württemberg Chamber Orchestra of Heilbronn, under the direction of Johannes Witt, gives a new orchestral dimension to Spark's sound and expands its emotional palette. Guest percussionists Vanessa Porter and Emil Kuyumcuyan bring additional rhythmic and colorful accents to the album. On this album, Spark once again captivates with an impressive variety of sounds and musical ideas, embodied by an original instrumental ensemble including numerous recorders, a melodica, a violin, a viola, a cello, and a piano. The music of this daring quintet is deeply classical, but opens up, both sonically and stylistically, to minimalist music, pop, the avant-garde, and jazz. What matters is not the genre, but the expression, the emotion, the connection with the audience. In addition to Meijering's main work, the musicians of Spark present four of their own compositions, which take up motifs and sound ideas from "Kiss of Fire" and develop them in a personal way. The titles "The Art of Forgiving," "Waltz of the Ladybirds," "What the Night Promised," and "Patti Is Dancing" reflect individual reflections and reveal an ensemble that lives its musical identity with passion and creativity. The album concludes with an orchestral finale, "Touch Her Soft Lips and Part," by William Walton. During joint concerts, Spark and the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra of Heilbronn felt that this piece perfectly complemented the main work—a delicate and peaceful conclusion to a flamboyant album. With "Kiss of Fire," the musicians of Spark tell a love story with music, their audience, and themselves. It is an album for all who love sound and emotion, surprise and depth: a true musical coup de foudre.
