Boombox » is the new episode of the Boombox series by Soul Jazz Records on the beginnings of hip-hop in the United States between 1979 and 1983. The album includes the first releases from flagship groups such as Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and The Funky Four Plus One More, as well as a host of little-known rarities and obscurities. This exuberant first wave of innocent, optimistic, and festive rap records was the first to attempt to recreate the sounds heard in community centers, block parties, and street jams that first took place in the Bronx in the mid-1970s. While the early DJs — Flash, Kool Herc, and Bambaataa — spun, mixed, and scratched now-classic breakbeat records like « Apache » by The Incredible Bongo Band or « The Mexican » by Babe Ruth, these early pre-sampled rap records were all made with live bands, often reworking disco tracks of the era. This new collection from Soul Jazz Records therefore celebrates these early old-school rap records, bringing together rare, classic, and obscure tracks released in the early days of rap.
