This new album, compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker, explores the many new styles that emerged in Cuba in the 1970s such as jazz, funk, Brazilian tropicalia and even disco, mixed with the Latin and salsa on the island as Cuban artists experimented with new musical forms created in Cuba’s unique socialist state. The album comes as a triple vinyl and deluxe double CD, with extensive sleeve notes, and is packed with heavy basslines, synth and wah-wah funk guitar combined with the heavy percussion, powerful brass lines and Latin rhythms of Cuban music known throughout the world. The music on this album features legendary Cuban bands such as Irakere, Los Van Van and Pablo Milanés plus a host of lesser-known artists such as the radical Grupo De Experimentación, Juan Pablo Torres Y Algo Nuevo, Grupo Monumental and Orquesta Ritmo Oriental, bands whose names remain largely unknown outside of Cuba due to the 60-year-old US trade embargo which is still in place today and prevents trade with Cuba – and as such most Cuban material has only ever been available in Cuba or the states of the former Soviet Union.
