The Versailles of the 17th century was very different from the immense and opulent château we know today... it was only after twenty years of work by architects, designers, and landscape gardener Le Nôtre that Louis XIV took up permanent residence there. Music holds a prominent place at the court of Louis XIV (1638 - 1715). It provided work and patronage for a very large number of composers, dancers, teachers, instrument makers, and theater directors, thus supporting an entire artistic culture. The extraordinary figures featured on this recording were all raised at the prestigious and wealthy court of Louis XIV.
