SML is a quintet based in Los Angeles, composed of Anna Butterss, Jeremiah Chiu, Josh Johnson, Booker Stardrum, and Gregory Uhlmann. "Spontaneous Music Live" features two full-length improvisation pieces, recorded live at Zebulon in Los Angeles during the group's residency in December 2025. The album captures the group in a completely improvised, spontaneous, and authentic performance, emphasizing deep musical development, collective interaction, and spontaneous creation. Recorded and mixed live on stereo tape by Bryce Gonzales, this record offers a raw testament to the group's live energy, contrasting with their previous, more polished studio albums. The result highlights SML's evolving identity, oscillating between structured production and free improvisation, and evokes avant-garde jazz and experimental live recordings.
