But the 'real' success of the adopted Rennes combo is that they managed to win over both the public and the critics, which was quite rare in 1995 for a band coming from the underground. And once again, it was a double whammy. Both fanzine writers and professional journalists were captivated by Plug. Just read the few reviews from that time that follow to be convinced. - - 'Eleven violently integral tracks that make Sloy a true great band. To be played at full volume, without any contraindications, contrary to what the cover suggests,' wrote the late Philippe Couderc in Abus Dangereux issue 42. The Bordeaux zine would even feature Sloy on the cover of its next issue. - - 'You think everything is in its place, yet there is something deliberately awkward, meant to hurt minds. It persists and signs until one becomes aware of the perversion of the approach. Sloy offers a cramped space where sounds truly screech, just to inflict pain where it feels good,' thunders Philippe Roizès in Rage issue 13. - - 'With this record, Sloy establishes itself as a major player in today's and tomorrow's rock by claiming values as simple as rigor, determination, honesty, and authenticity,' predicts Jean-Noël Levavasseur in the Toulouse magazine Mix. - - Rock Sound presents the band in its issue 27 (July-August 1995): 'With the legacy of Noir Désir behind them, Sloy finally shows the way to an electric rock that is severe, austere, yet full of life and hope.
