Description

After a sensational start with two acclaimed albums and growing notoriety, Sloy was eagerly awaited for this third album. This time, there’s no Steve Albini behind the console; the band produced the album with the help of Peter Deimel, still at Black Box studio. The final installment of a trilogy sponsored by EDF, Electrelite shows that Sloy still prefers the gégène to the halogen. Here, there’s no drop in tension, but a blinding light of no-wave neon, painful hardcore implosions. Sloy plays rock like one bursts an abscess, from which emerge today choirs, violins, and a trumpet. Thanks to a profusion of sharp arrangements over an always economical rhythm, Sloy manages to enrich their music while radicalizing it. But without taking away from their creative energy, nor from a still crazy vocal performance; and by giving an even greater place to the bass, which has become the true boss, reminding us of Devo's constant influence. ‘Electrelite’ is ultimately less challenging and more accessible than its predecessors, a perfect launch pad for the Gonzalez rocket on stage; a recording studio being by nature too cramped, they wanted to push the walls and bring their live sound in. As a result, beneath a seemingly calmer surface, it’s an album that exudes a constant explosiveness.
