Following the success of La Belle Danse, Skip Sempé presents one of the masterpieces of the Renaissance, Michael Praetorius’s Terpsichore. A major composer of the Renaissance, Michael Praetorius lists, arranges and compiles in his collection Terpsichore more than 300 dances, composed by him, anonymous, or borrowed from other composers, and considered a true bible of dance in the early 17th century. Already at the crossroads of German, Italian and French musical influences, Skip Sempé complements the dances of the German master with those of William Brade, his English contemporary whose collections were somewhat overlooked at the time, so great was the success of Terpsichore. As always with Skip Sempé, the instrumentation is rich, colorful and luxuriant. The strings play with the winds through these four “ballets” reconstructed by Skip Sempé, who once again shows, after his masterful recording of La Pellegrina, his commitment to bringing back into focus a rare but major Renaissance repertoire in Europe.
