A major composer of the Renaissance, Michael Praetorius lists, arranges, and compiles in his collection Terpsichore more than 300 dances, composed by himself, anonymous, or borrowed from other composers, and considered a true bible of dance at the beginning of the 17th century. Already at the crossroads of German, Italian, and French musical influences, Skip Sempé complements the dances of the German master with those of William Brade, his English contemporary whose collections had been somewhat ignored at the time, so great was the success of Terpsichore. As always with Skip Sempé, the instrumentation is rich, colorful, and lush. The strings play with the winds through these four "ballets" reconstructed by Skip Sempé, who shows once again, after his masterful recording of La Pellegrina, his commitment to reviving a rare but major repertoire of the Renaissance in Europe.
