Sinead O'Connor has more often been criticized for her attitude than for her music! Without giving in to the cliché (a stubborn one, that cliché) of the fiery, rebellious Irishwoman who draws the public’s wrath for blasphemy (the list of offenses is long, ranging from her openly displayed contempt for U2 to the photo of the pope she tears up during an anniversary concert in tribute to Bob Dylan at Madison Square Garden), one has to admit that the singer is gifted at provocation! Joking aside, all of this has no more to do with music than her shaved head, and there’s hardly anyone but Sinatra (not exactly a saint himself) who would take offense! Songs like "Nothing Compares 2U" (written by Prince) or "This Is A Rebel Song" are deeply moving, and the collection So Far..., which compiles the best of the first five albums, besides looking great, is surprisingly moving.
