Were American waters less murky 20 years ago? In any case, it was in 1998 that the legendary American indie rock band Silver Jews released their third album featuring David Berman, Stephen Malkmus, Tim Barnes, Mike Fellows, and Chris Stroffolino. According to Pitchfork, the album approaches perfection and deserves the rare score of 9.4. Les Inrockuptibles wrote presciently at the time, "they are recording gold records (...) [this gold] that does not devalue with the passage of time and the trends that fade." American Water was recorded at the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn and mastered at Abbey Road Studios. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the album is getting a new half-speed mastering at Abbey Road to provide even more detail and depth, along with its first release on cassette. A must-have for indie rock!
