Sidney Bechet is an instrumentalist with incomparable lyricism and endowed with an unwavering harmonic sensitivity. His Creole origins certainly contributed to developing in him this very particular sense of melodic ornamentation, as well as his feverish and spicy sound. His exceptional vibrato and mastery of breath allowed him to develop a language that was both colorful and emotional, capable of reaching the hearts of his listeners. A character with a strong personality, bordering on dictatorial, Bechet was never as happy as when he succeeded in dominating his accompanists. It is undoubtedly from this will to power that his extraordinary dynamism comes, to which it is certainly appropriate to add a sensitivity, a musical memory, and an exceptional ear that allowed him to reach the top, he who was an irreducible self-taught person who could not read music. The anthology dedicated to him by the famous JAZZ CHARACTERS NEW SERIES collection offers 75 of his most essential recordings, in their remastered original versions.
