SHEARWATER is releasing its new album, Jet Plane and Oxbow. The album, which features the brilliant “Quiet Americans” and “Only Child,” was produced by Danny Reisch between Austin and Los Angeles, and mixed by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound studio in New York. Jet Plane and Oxbow is without a doubt the band’s densest and most ambitious album to date. Indeed, it is easy to imagine these songs roaring on stage — but above all, it is the most detailed and the most intriguing. Jonathan Meiburg and producer Reisch (who had already recorded Animal Joy and Fellow Travelers) worked for two years on this project, with the help of drummer Cully Symington, Howard Draper, Lucas Oswald, Jesca Hoop, Abram Shook, and Jenn Wasner. This time, SHEARWATER’s secret weapon is film composer and percussionist Brian Reitzell, who has, among other things, created the soundtracks for The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, The Bling Ring, and 30 Days of Night. The arsenal of instruments used on Jet Plane and Oxbow underscores the depth and cinematic scope of the album, and reflects the band’s choice to anchor it in an era when digital technology is beginning to transform the world of recorded music.
