Since its emergence in 2015, Sextile has been a force in the underground parties of Los Angeles, capable of igniting a riot with the raw scream of a synth or the sharp jolt of a guitar. Sextile is now ready to rage with a new album that boosts serotonin, a new group dynamic, faster BPMs, and an increasingly wild direction. Recorded in Yucca Valley, Push bounces on the fringes of hardcore dance music, with elements of drum & bass, gabber, and trance illuminating the album like glow sticks at a 90s Fantazia rave. The album is imbued with a punk spirit. The hint is in the name with “Crassy Mel,” which is partly an energetic tribute to the anarcho-punk legends of the 70s, Crass. The power of headbanging, vocal shrieks, and Prodigy-style breakbeats enhance the sense of joy that radiates from the album. Push was inspired by fans of punk and electronic music seeking pleasure at concerts or raves. Josh Wink, Screamadelica, Iggy Pop, Goldie, and early XL Recordings are the main influences of Push, and the dancefloor remains a constant presence. In homage to their hometown, “New York” brings out these musical touchstones, guiding the album like a star dipped in acid with its grimacing nod to “Higher State of Consciousness” and a whirlwind of music box synthesizers.
